A great way to start is to install shelving. It will save you tons of time and energy, and after all isn’t that what we are all looking for? Shelving will get the “stuff” out of your way. Four critical areas where shelving is a must are closets, kitchen, office and garage or storage areas.
Shelving can be created from a multitude of materials. They can be as wide ranging as snap together plastic kits, coated metal, wood wire and metal. Price ranges are just as diverse and there is something for every budget.

Start with a plan.
What do you need to organize? In a bedroom closet you will want a space for shoes, sweaters, undergarments and accessories. Double poles will accommodate hanging garments. Measure the space then decide how you want the layout. (Hint: Always start in the corner when installing.) Start the installation with the critical handyperson’s tools; pencil, level, ruler, screw-driver, and hammer. Whatever type of shelving you choose, buy it to fit and save yourself the stress of having to cut it to fit at home.

Kitchen cabinets can be enhanced by using shelving to sort and organize. Create a space for pots, pans, lids, plates, kitchen utensils, food and spices alike. There is a wide variety of prefabricated shelving and space savers in the marketplace. Everything from Lazy Susans to spice racks and shelf dividers. Simply adding additional shelving at various heights will create an inspired custom kitchen.
In the office shelving can be an inexpensive addition to your interior decorating. Office shelving can consist of fine furniture in finishes that coordinate with the home décor or you can add a new dimension to the room utilizing a wide variety of shelving materials and styles. Metal shelving can create a mirrored finish to the area as well as being a good alternative to the woods if you have heavier items to display.

Remember, the goal is to create an organized space to make life easier. The decision to hide shelving or use it to create the areas ambiance is up to you, and limited only by your imagination.
In the garage keep in mind that you may be placing heavier, more cumbersome items on shelves. Quality commercial shelving should be used. No matter what type of shelving has been selected, the result will be a more organized space, a new look, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing where everything is.
